Abstract Paintings – Modern Art

Moving on to the topic of modern art, this type of art seems much easier to replicate. Jackson Pollock poured and dripped paint onto a canvas placed on the floor. Can this be called great art? It must be! It’s brilliant when you stop to think that no one had thought to use this technique up until the moment Pollack did! Could we argue that anyone could have done this piece? Try it for yourself; it’s more complicated than it looks.

We have all heard too often the self-appointed art critic who protests.. a child could have done that! But believe me, this does not reflect reality. One of the most difficult things to achieve as an artist is the ability to simplify and make the picture less cluttered with unnecessary details. What to leave in, what to omit? In the case of Pollock’s abstract painting, the positioning of red and green side by side is no easy feat. They have to be balanced out by other colours to achieve a more harmonious, appealing look. Just as the wrong balance of flavours in cooking can spoil the end result, the same holds true in art. We can put the viewer off balance with the wrong mix of colours to the extent that the message is lost.
